Stitch guide: original “Leaves” schematic

The chart supplied with the image has 36 numbered row positions (some numbers appear repeated/misprinted) and shows knit, purl, twisted knit, 3/3 cable crosses and a special “Leaves” complex. That special complex is not fully explained in the image. Do not attempt an exact row-by-row reconstruction from this incomplete legend.

Original chart supplied by customer. Read the knitting chart according to its own symbol key. For a testable written alternative use the decorative 12-stitch panel below.

Written decorative panel — substitute motif (12 sts, 16 rows)

This creates a bold central braided cable framed with purl texture. It is inspired by the raised leaf-like cables in the photo but is not the same leaf stitch. Work within stockinette or garter backgrounds as instructed below; panels are on the RS of the front pieces.

Row 1: RS: p2, k8, p2.

Row 2: WS: k2, p8, k2.

Row 3: RS: p2, k8, p2.

Row 4: WS: k2, p8, k2.

Row 5: RS: p2, C4F, C4B, p2.

Repeat rows 1–16 for the required length. To make the charted motif instead, substitute a verified chart swatch of the SAME stitch width and gauge; this document does not give a full written version of the special “Leaves” complex.

Construction plan and fit

The pattern is worked as 4 lower-leg half-panels: two halves become the back, and one front half continues into each front body. This makes a center-back join at the crotch and a button opening running down the center front. Sew leg inseams and side seams after shoulders are joined. The pictured garment may use a different commercial construction.

1.         Swatch in garter stitch with main needles. Wash and dry as the garment will be cared for; measure stitches and rows over 10 cm. Adjust needle size until close to 20 sts and 36 rows.

2.         Measure the child’s chest, total shoulder-to-ankle length, inseam and wrist. For the stated size, aim for a finished body chest around 56 cm, leg opening around 17–18 cm, and choose leg length to suit the child.

3.         Use garter stitch for the plain fabric. The front cable panel is an exception: it uses the RS/WS stitch instructions above.

PART 1 — Lower-leg panels (make 4)

All stitch counts below are PER FLAT PANEL. One panel spans about half the circumference of a leg. Make two for the back and one for each front.

4.         With smaller needles, CO 18 sts. Work 1×1 rib for 16 rows (about 4 cm); finish after a WS row.

5.         Change to main needles. First garter row: k2, [M1, k2] eight times, ending as required to spread increases evenly = 26 sts. If working the increases differently, the required endpoint is 26 sts.

6.         Work garter stitch for 8 rows. Increase 1 st at BOTH ends of the next RS row (k1, M1L, knit to last st, M1R, k1) = 28 sts.

7.         Continue garter stitch straight until each panel measures about 20–22 cm from the cuff, or matches the desired inseam. End after a WS row.

8.         Label two panels Back Left and Back Right, and two Front Left and Front Right. Leave all stitches live on holders; do not BO.

PART 2 — Back body (56 sts)

9.         Place Back Left 28 sts and Back Right 28 sts on the same main needle, with their future crotch edges next to each other. Knit across both groups = 56 sts. Seam the short center-back join at the crotch later.

10.    Continue straight in garter stitch until the length above the crotch is about 25 cm (about 90 rows at the stated gauge).

11.    Armhole: keep the dropped-shoulder silhouette. Knit straight for another 11 cm (approximately 40 rows). Back piece now measures about 36 cm above crotch.

12.    Back neckline/shoulders: knit 18 sts, BO center 20 sts, knit remaining 18 sts. Work the two 18-st shoulders separately for 2 more rows. BO both shoulders loosely.

PART 3 — Left front (28 sts)

13.    Transfer Front Left 28 sts to main needle. Work 4 sts in garter at center-front opening, then 12-st cable panel, then 12 sts garter to the side seam; maintain the cable panel across 16-row repeats.

14.    Continue as set until front measures 25 cm above the crotch; then continue straight for another 7 cm above that point (front now about 32 cm from crotch).

15.    Shape neck at center-front edge: BO 6 sts once, then BO 2 sts once, then decrease 1 st at neck edge on each of the next 2 RS rows. 18 sts remain for shoulder. If the cable panel meets neckline shaping, discontinue the panel and knit those partial stitches in garter.

16.    Continue without shaping until front shoulder height matches back (36 cm above crotch). BO 18 shoulder sts. Mark this front for the buttonhole band.

PART 4 — Right front (28 sts)

17.    Work a mirror image: 12 sts garter from side edge, then 12-st cable panel, then 4 garter stitches at center-front edge. Keep the panel at the same height and orientation as the left front.

18.    At about 32 cm above the crotch, shape at center-front edge in the mirror image: BO 6, BO 2, then decrease 1 on each of 2 RS rows; 18 shoulder sts remain.

19.    Continue until front and back heights match. BO remaining 18 shoulder sts. Before seaming, check panel placement, front overlap, and neckline symmetry.

PART 5 — Sleeves (make 2)

20.    With smaller needles CO 30 sts. Work 1×1 rib 16 rows (about 4 cm).

21.    Change to main needles. Knit a garter row, increasing 6 stitches evenly = 36 sts.

22.    Work in garter, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 10th row 6 times = 48 sts. Continue without further increases until sleeve measures about 24 cm from cuff, or the measured underarm-to-wrist plus desired allowance.

23.    BO loosely. Fold sleeve lengthwise and seam from cuff to upper edge. Repeat for second sleeve.

PART 6 — Assembly and hood

24.    With RS facing, seam front shoulders to back shoulders (18 sts each), leaving the back neck opening and shaped front neckline open.

25.    On each side seam, mark 11 cm down from shoulder; this is the sleeve opening. Sew body sides from the leg-crotch junction to the armhole markers, then sew the inseam edges of all four leg panels, keeping the central front opening free.

26.    Set each sleeve evenly into its 22 cm armhole perimeter. Ease any excess at shoulder seam without puckering; sew securely.

27.    Hood pickup: With RS facing and main needles, pick up approximately 58–66 sts around the entire neckline, distributed evenly (front necklines + back neckline). This is an estimated count; a smooth fit matters more than the exact count. Work garter stitch for about 20–22 cm.

28.    BO loosely. Fold hood in half at center back, matching the top edge; sew the upper hood seam. Optional: pick up stitches around the hood opening, work 6 garter rows, and BO loosely for a firm edging.

PART 7 — Button bands and fastening

29.    For the right front band, with smaller needles and RS facing, pick up approx. 3 stitches for every 4 rows along the entire center front, including the leg opening. Knit 8 rows garter; BO loosely.

30.    For the left front band, pick up the same number of stitches. Work 3 rows garter. On row 4, make 5 or 6 evenly spaced buttonholes, leaving one buttonhole near the upper chest and keeping the lowest clear of the crotch. Each buttonhole: yarn over, k2tog (1-st buttonhole). Work another 4 rows garter and BO.

31.    Overlap front bands (left over right, or your preferred orientation). Mark the buttons through the actual buttonholes, and sew buttons securely to the opposite band.

32.    Check that the garment can open sufficiently for changing. For a functional infant garment, consider snap fasteners along the inseam/crotch if your construction and sewing skills allow. This pattern does not include a tested snap-placket conversion.

PART 8 — Finishing and care

33.    Weave in all yarn ends on the WS; reinforce cable-panel ends and collar joins.

34.    Wash according to yarn label, lay flat and gently shape to measurements. Do not overstretch ribbing or cables.

35.    Inspect button security after every wash. Small buttons are a choking risk if detached; use extra-strong attachment and never leave a baby with loose embellishments.

36.    Try the garment over normal baby clothes and check neck opening, mobility, leg coverage and sleeve fit. Never use the hood as sleepwear and follow safe-sleep guidance.
